What Is rssHugger And Can It Promote Your Blog?

What is rssHuggerWhat is rssHugger? Can it be used to promote your blog? I now know the answer to the first question. But as for the second, I will just have to wait to find out.

So, what is rssHugger? rssHugger looks like a blog directory for rss feeds. The goal of rssHugger is to help you as a blogger promote your blog. It aims to do this in 3 ways:

  1. By sending traffic to your blog directly from rssHugger,
  2. By providing backlinks to help with your Search Engine Optimization efforts, and
  3. By increasing the number of subscribers to your rss feed.

Can rssHugger Promote Itself?

These 3 goals all look quite reasonable - provided rssHugger can generate traffic for itself. This is probably the weak link in the rssHugger strategy. However, there appear to be 2 main undertakings to address this issue.

Viral Marketing - That’ll Do the Trick..

The first is a viral marketing effort. After some feedback from John Chow (see rssHugger Wants to Share a Little Love), Collin (the creator of rssHugger) has decided to wave the $10 joining fee provided you post a review of rssHugger on your blog (it used to be $10 plus a review!). This should certainly see some buzz in the blogging community. The $10 joining fee was always a stretch. I know you get your spot for 10 years, but it’s still hard to see the value. As John Chow correctly pointed out, Collin is probably better off monetizing this project in other ways.

But Can It Be Sustained?

The second plank in Collin’s strategy to drive traffic to rssHugger is called the Top 100. This is a list of the top 100 blogs on rssHugger based on the amount of traffic sent to their rssHugger Blog Page. The traffic count resets at the beginning of each month to “keep everyone on an even playing field”, but also to encourage people to blog about rssHugger on a monthly basis.

Will these traffic generation strategies work for rssHugger? Therein lies the answer to my second question - can rssHugger be used to promote your blog? If you are to receive any benefit from your listing with rssHugger, it will need to generate alot of traffic. I have my doubts. Beyond my initial registration, I can’t yet see a compelling reason to return to rssHugger. Collin’s trying to compete with some pretty big players in the rss aggregation field, but he is trying to differentiate himself by keeping out the spam.

I’m In!

One good thing - the viral marketing campaign seems to be working. After all, that’s the purpose of this What is rssHugger? post. Good luck Collin!
