Have you ever wondered how to get your page on Google Alerts? I was asked that very question a little while ago and had to admit I didn’t know the answer. More importantly, why would you want to get your page on Google Alerts?

Well, if you’re like me, you get a fair chunk of visitors coming to your site as a result Google web searches. Now imagine that instead of people having to actively search on key phrases within your niche, they just received daily emails from Google with links to your articles. Sounds like a pretty good way to broaden your reach doesn’t it.

But first, for those that aren’t familiar with the service, Google Alerts allows you to enter one or more topics you wish to monitor, then when Google finds any new results which match your criteria, they will be emailed to you. I wrote about how bloggers can use this service in Get The Latest News With Google Alerts. Having an appreciation of the value of being included in such an email distribution, I did some research to find out the criteria for inclusion in a Google Alert email. I found good news and bad news. According to the Google Alerts FAQ, the email will contain only changes in the top 20 results of your Google Web Search (or top 10 in the case of News or Blog Search).

The good news is that if you already rank in the first page for your key phrase, you should already be in the email. The bad news is that if you don’t currently rank well, you have some work to do - you need get your search ranking right up near the top to make use of Google Alerts. But, given the dominance of Google in the web search market, you should already be doing your best to be near the top of the search results for your niche.

If anyone has has any other ideas about how to get your page on Google Alerts, please let me know.

I accidentally stumbled upon google alerts when I was exploring other features of my google account. I find Google alerts to be helpful to me and my work because i find relevant articles posted by other people about our institution — that sometimes i do not know about. The alerts has helped me with updating the “what’s new” section of our weblog and linking to relevant pages where news have been published.

I am happy that– there were times I see my blog in google alerts whenever i have new posts. I would definitely recommend also the use of Google Alerts. Find our how it can be helpful to you.

Google Alerts are amazing! The other day I published a blog post about a great new book I had just finished reading, and while I was in the process of firing off an email to the author to let her know about the post I received an email from HER. It turns out that she had received a Google Alert about the post almost immediately after I hit the “Publish” button!
