Should You Write About It?

I was catching up on some reading over at Blog-Op the other day when I came across a post titled To Post Or Not To Post (am I allowed to use the word “post” so many times in one sentence?). In it Chris poses some interesting questions for smaller bloggers, when they are considering whether to post on a particularly hot topic:

Are we expected to leave posts about the big topics just to the big bloggers?

Someone else has written about something, so you should never blog about it in future?

If you haven’t got anything original to write, don’t post at all?

I must admit, these are questions I have pondered in the past. While I can’t say I have reached any definitive conclusions, I think the following points are worth considering when deciding whether to blog on any given hot topic.

Do you have anything original to add?
While this sounds obvious, it’s still worth thinking about. The major bloggers may have already broken the news and provided good coverage. But you might have some unique perspective or insight to offer on the topic. If so, you should probably express your view. That’s one of the reasons for blogging.

It might also be that the topic has special relevance to your readership base or your niche. This may also lead you to write a post on the topic.

Consider it in the overall context of your blog.
Not everybody consumes blog posts through an RSS feed. You may think it’s important to include a post on the topic for completeness. This means that readers navigating through your blog, as they would a traditional website, will get a cohesive view of the material you are presenting.

I agree with Chris when he says “…you shouldn’t be put off writing about something, just because others already have”. There are other factors to consider.
