Google Webmaster Tools Now Tracks Inbound Links

I read on the Official Google Webmaster Central Blog a couple of days ago that Google Webmaster Tools now allows you to see a larger sample of links to your blog.
In the past, you could use Google’s link: search operator to find the pages that link to your site, however, the result was just just a small sample of the inbound links.
Now using Webmaster Tools you can see a larger sample (although still not all) of the inbound links to your website. On top of this, Webmaster Tools provides the following functions:
- Links are categorized to be either External and Internal. This means you can view only those links which come from pages outside your sub-domain or those coming only from pages in your sub-domain.
- Links are summarized at page level for your website. You can see the total number of links to each page on you site, then drill down to see where each of the links are coming from. Also, you can apply a filter to see just a specific page.
- You can download the link data. You can download the external links, the internal links or the current summary table you are viewing. The download is limited to one million external links.
In order to use this tool you will need to have verified that the site in question is yours. I discussed this further in my earlier post on Google Webmaster Tools.
It is worth noting that Yahoo have a similar tool called Yahoo Site Explorer. Site explorer shows more inbound links to Monetize Your Blog than Google Webmaster Tools does. Read my post on Yahoo Site Explorer.

I have used iWebTool’s backlink checker:

It does not generate as much link as Yahoo, but you can consider it as an alternative.
