Blogger platform named as Top Hosted Blogging Platform

PC World recently named Google’s Blogger platform as its top pick in free and low-cost hosted blogging platforms in a recent article - Powerful Software for Better Blogging.

According to PC World, the top 5 platforms are:

  1. Google Blogger
  2. WordPress
  3. TypePad
  4. Tripod
  5. SquareSpace

The criteria for evaluating the blogging platforms was as follows:

We built blogs with each program, testing how quickly the app allows you to create and update posts and how easy its tools are to use; we also analyzed the ability to upload images. In addition, we assessed the quality of the provided templates, and how easy it is to customize them.

The only downside to Blogger was its lack of ability to host photo galleries.

In placing WordPress in second place, PC World note that ads are not allowed (I presume they are referring to the wordpress.com platform). This is an important consideration when trying to make money from your blog. Running ads is a prime money maker for many blogs and removing that option narrows down the money making strategies available to you as a blogger.

I should point out that if you purchase your own web hosting package, you are able to install the (free) WordPress software and run ads (or use any other means of monetizing your blog you can dream up).

Blogger is the top blog platform? What drugs were they smoking?

    WordPress self-hosted all the way… :-)

Hi Chris. I though that might get you going…

I don’t think they looked at self-hosted options though.

For some reason, I am betting Google, who owns blogger, would continue to be a leader given its resources and ability to acquire other companies.

This would include the purchase of YouTube. YouTube’s Home page now says “Powered by Google”

I also like the way their photo service Picasa now automatically integrates to post a picture within two or three clicks, to move the photo from Picasa to my blog.
