Why does my position in Google change so much

A few weeks ago, I noticed that I had started getting some traffic from google. When I looked into it further, I found that I ranked in the top ten (on the first page) for one of my keyword combinations (read more about the Google Rankings tool I used to find my ranking). I wasn’t getting a whole lot of traffic, but it was enough to keep things ticking over.
Last week I checked my rank in Google again and it was down at about 960. I was surprised and a little disappointed as my traffic from google had dried up completely. I hadn’t made any major changes to my blog yet I had dropped from position 6 down to 960. I looked around for an answer but couldn’t find anything definite.
One of the best answers I got was that sites which are still relatively new (less than 2 months old in my case) are quite volatile in their rank in google. The other main theory put forward was that google are doing some sort of update at the moment and this is effecting the ranking of search results. This second explanation could be good or bad for me. Was my blog temporarily near the top because of the update (when in fact it should have been much lower)? Or was it pushed down from its rightful place near the top by the update? I’d like to think the latter.
The latest news is that yesterday, I noticed traffic coming from google again. This time when I checked my ranking, two combinations of my keywords were in the top 10 (ie. first page) while another two where in the top 20 (on the second page). Now, I don’t know how fleeting this ranking will be, but it’s nice to have the additional traffic. I will monitor my position over the coming weeks and post my observations.
If anyone else has any experiences with volatile rankings in google or has any theories as to why it may be, leave a comment or drop me an email.

Mine was up & down as well at first.
Since uploading my sitemaps to Google, my posts figure quite well for searches using the words in the title.
I am a real convert to sitemaps & wouldn’t attempt a blog without one. Wordpress updates my sitemap after every post AND pings Google to let them know. I’m convinced this is what does it (and a great blog of course….)
