How to measure your inbound links

From what I know about Search Engine Optimization (SEO), inbound links are very important if you want a high ranking in the search engines. So, how do you know how many inbound links you have?

Google have an option where you can use

link:url

to find all links to a particular website. However, this does not work when I type in

link:monetize-your-blog.blogspot.com

There seems to be some conjecture as to why this is. I have heard that blogs as new as mine wont show inbound links, at least until the next page rank update. I have read in other places that it is because I don’t have enough inbound links which Google considers to be of good quality. As with much about the google search engine, it is hard to come by a definitive answer. Maybe someone could leave a comment if they have a better theory.

The Yahoo Alternative
So I managed to find an alternative tool from Yahoo. It’s called Yahoo Site Explorer. Using this tool you can find out how many of your pages are indexed and if you chose the Inlinks option at the top of the search results, you can also get a list of the pages which link to your website.

I haven’t done any comparison between the results given Google and Yahoo. Also, I don’t know how up-to-date the list of inbound links is. But it should give you a rough idea of how your SEO activities are progressing.
