StatCounter.com Web Stats Tools

I have decided to give the StatCounter Web Stats Tool a try. Thanks to Chris over at Thermal for the tip. Chris suggested it as an alternative to Google Analytics (read more about my experience with Google Analytics).

Setting up StatCounter was dead simple. I just filled in some basic details to register then added my blog. Foe each website you would like to track, you will need to add a project. A project appears to be just a container to hold the information about a website which you are tracking. Each time you want to track a new website, you would add it as a new project.

I went for the (free) standard project (other alternatives were advanced and e-commerce project but they were not available yet). Once the project was set up, I was run through a wizard to generate the tracking code for me to put on my blog. I added the tracking code to my blog (blogger didn’t like the syntax so I had to modify it a little) and I was away. I have only just added the tracking code so there has been very little traffic so far.

First impressions are that it is quite good. The interface is not a slick as Google Analytics but it seems to offer most of the same features. As Chris pointed out, it offers the ability to remove yourself from being tracked so you can get a more accurate picture of the traffic. StatCounter seems to offer more detailed statistics than Google Analytics. Also, the stats seem to update immediately, where I think Google Analytics are only updated periodically (I’m not sure how frequent but I think I read it was daily).

I will post more information about StatCounter after I have used it for a while.
