Well, as promised, 2 days after my application for Adsense, I received a response. All that remained was to actually add the advertisements to my blog.
To do this I went to Template, Page Elements then selected Add a Page Element and chose Adsense as the type of element. You can choose from a few different styles and sizes. Once the new element has been created you can drag it around the screen to position it wherever you like.
The idea of Adsense seems to be to provide advertisements which are relevent to the content of your blog. I don’t know how good the targeting is yet. Also there must be some balance of quantity and positioning of advertisements so that they are effective without dominating the page and annoying the reader. There must have been some studies done on this. I will do some investigation and post my findings soon. I guess that will drive the layout of my Adsense ads. In the meantime, I will leave them in the somewhat arbitrary position in which they find themselves now.
