How did all of this come about?

A colleague of mine was explaining the concept of monetizing a blog the other day. I have to admit to not being terribly web-savvy and while I knew what a blog was, I didn’t know much more. I was intrigued at the idea of earning money from blogging and decided to explore it further. After doing some basic research, I decided to give it a go. I have no real concept of how difficult the task will be, how long it will take or whether I will have any success at. But, the worst-case scenario is that I will fail miserably, learn a lot and leave a record for any others who may be interested in attempting the same thing.

What’s the plan?

So, starting from absolute zero (or possibly less) I am going to try to get a blog off the ground which achieves all of the following goals:

  1. Is interesting (to at least someone else out there),
  2. Is honest
  3. Earns at least one dollar.

The is interesting part should hopefully be self-evident. If the blog is not interesting, nobody will read it. Based on my limited knowledge of monetizing a blog, I realize that I need people to read my blog. There is also personal pride at stake. Surely my musings must be of interest to someone…

The reason for the honesty part is that I have heard about paid review sites and the like where you get paid to review a product on your blog. While in principle I don’t see any issue with this, I do believe that such activities should be declared up front. So if I end up going down that path, I will be sure to let everyone know if I stand to gain personally from anything specific which appears on this blog.

The earns at least one dollar part is the purpose (or excuse) for the very existence of this blog. It doesn’t sound like a terribly lofty goal, but I will be very satisfied to earn even one single dollar out of this exercise. After all that is why I am here.

Where to from here?

What a good question. I only have the very vaguest of ideas. The first step was to create the blog. I guess technically I have done that. I will provide more detail (such as there is) of that process in an upcoming post. At least that is one box I can tick.

I guess at a high level the strategy will be to:

  1. Let people know I am here. I have heard about search engine optimization and I guess that is something I will need to investigate further.
  2. Investigate what the options are for earning money from a blog. I know there is Google Adsense, and I have already mentioned paid reviews.
  3. Put the theory into practice.

If anyone has any interesting ideas or experiences they would like to share, I would be most grateful. Drop me a line even if it is just to let me know that what I am doing really sucks. I am looking for constructive criticism if possible, but I will accept anything really.

Thats it for now. I’m off now to find out how on earth I am going to do this. As with most tasks on the internet, I will start with Google (that was not a paid advertisement by the way).
